MY NYSC EXPERIENCE IN KATSINA STATE - REGISTRATION AND MOVING TO CAMP

Registration for mobilization began early February, and I registered early, but not early enough to make Stream 1 of the 2016 Batch A(an oversight that would later cause me anxiety). Well,I went to this cafe and chose KADUNA, AKWA IBOM, ENUGU AND NASSARAWA in that order. I was fixated on getting posted far away from home, so I ignored my mum who pleaded for me to stay close.3 months later however, with the stream 1 people already through with camping, we were yet to hear anything from NYSC as per our camping. This put a lot of strain on me as I couldn't even walk about in the area because I already said my goodbyes a month ago, when NYSC said we would resume, only for them to postpone it.A series of postponements led PCMS to start calling the people in the know for information on resumption. Even the DG was not left out. There was even a nationwide protest in which grievances were made known. Eventually, light came at the end of the tunnel and camping was fixed for 13th June, 2016 and we all got ready for camping. We were asked to reprint the call-up letter. I reprinted mine, saw Katsina and started sweating. Katsina Ke?? modaran
. I am definately in the den of the Boko Haram. Lol. Who were the village witches following me to the extent that my call up was changed from the initial Enugu to this god-forsaken Katsina state? My mind was filled with great turmoil.. no be u talk say u wan go North, abi kilo tun sele?? , my mum chided me in Youruba. I was hoping for a northern state, but Katsina was really strectching oo. Lol. Quickly I went on Google to find out stuff about the state. My initial apprenhensions about security were dispelled after I saw a forum for ex Katsina corpers allaying any fears what so ever. I was still wary about the SHARIA LAW prevalent over there though. I cannor coman let sum pipu cut my hand because of their girls lol.
JOURNEY UP NORTH
The journey to Katsina state would take me from Lagos to Kano and then a final connecting bus to Katsina. The total journey would be 22hours,depending on the driver and all things being equal. The farthest I've gone from home is to Akure back in 2011 for my post jamb. And so I boarded the bus headed for Katsina.
We left Lagos about 12pm then arrived Kano the following day at around 7:30am.From Kano we got a Katsina bus. The Kano-Katsina road has got to be the most boring road ever constructed 😕😕. We were just going on a straight line for hours with no turning and nothing to see except for villages, villages and more villages. I later came to realize that this is a common feature of the north:long, boring roads with villages and farms on either side. Towns are far from each other. We arrived at the camp at around 10am,and after checking at the gate, I entered and was ready to begin camping!!
